Pioneer Weekend-Friday Part 1

Whew, what a weekend! The second weekend in September found the entire Burns clan (Pa, Ma, Kyle, Don and myself) living in the 19th century at the Genesee Country Museum in Mumford. We got to experience so much and I’m going to try my best to sum it all up in this 21st century format.

We arrived on Friday about 2pm with one duffel bag packed for the 5 of us. My one essential item for the weekend was my digital camera, the rest of the 21st century I was quite content to leave behind.

Above is the hearth where we cooked all our meals. Below is another interior of the cabin. After donning our outfits we headed down to the cabin and immediately got to work.

We roped the bed for Ma and Pa to sleep in We had to wind the rope through the holes in the sides of the bed and then use a bed key to take the slack out. Hence, sleep tight!stuffed our ticks with straw sewed the ticks (with a sprig of lavender inside for a fresh scent)

churned butter

hauled ferkins of water

and explored the gardens in the Village to get a sense of what was available to us

While Kyle, Don and I were exploring we came across peaches and apples. Then we came across a kind lady who passed along some gingerbread and some amazing peach jam. Quite the scavengers we were!

Our invaluable Aunt Marie had spent the afternoon preparing dinner for us while we were settling in and exploring. After she made sure we were all set, we got to enjoy our delicious dinner of bubble and squeak (i.e. bacon and cabbage), salad, and johnnycake.
